I am back after one month away from this blog :'( I wanted to share men waistcoats to ask your forgiveness ! That’s why Mocenigo Museum is one of the best museums to see these lovely jackets (it’s quite a small museum but it must be seen if you go in Venice).

All my tippers (subscription HERE) will get all my photos (with embroidery details) in high definition.

A little reminder of french vocabulary : the 17th « pourpoint » (=doublet) lengthen to become a « veste » (= a jacket) under the reign of Louis XIV and a « gilet » (=waistcoat) and the end of Louis XV’s reign (after loosing its length and its sleeves -but not always-).

***

You can see some Louis XV waistcoats in this museum (few, unfortunatly) : you will notice its brocade fabrics made of silk and metallic threads (typical in mid-18th century fashion) and the body’s shape (because even if men did not wear stays or corsets their clothes used to change their waist shape).

***

The exhibition gives a large space to embroidered waistcoats <3 They are not very long, all have the same cut and a short collar (or no collar at all). The fabrics are now simple and not expensive and the added value is in the gorgeous embroideries.

***

After that comes the « Directoire » period, during which waistcoats shorten (the bottom line was often straight) whereas collars rise (and sometime part to surimpose on the coat’s collar) and buttons are put on two separate button lines. I wish I was able to see more common waistcoats in the museum (with stripes for exemple) because embroideries were fashionable (on court clothes) but not a « standard ».

***

As a conclusion, a typical 19th century waistcoat (from the romantic erea). The collar is wide open and the bottom line goes down on the belly.

Today I will talk about a Directoire period dress (circa 1795-1800) a friend lent me for its study. We can guess it has been worn for masked balls (called « bals parés ») during the 19th century, when ladies used to borrow their grannies old clothes. Unfortunatly the 19th century cleaning methods used tin salt which destroys fabrics (acid corrodes silk fibers).
