Two funny facts about the anglaise (n°297, right) : see the contrasting lining (which was something very common) but the straight sleeves (which is, however, quite rare before the french revolution).

This kind of dresses reminds of the famous « chemises à la Reine », called « robes en Gaulle » too, which are well known since queen Marie-Antoinette was painted in one of them at the start of the 1780’s by Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun (which was shocking for people in those days). We often think these dresses were white : it was, at the beginning, but colours and materials evolved fast. You can see on the following fashion plate (right) that the dress is yellow too, and you can see this kind of dress in the movie « The Duchess » (image on the left), because costumes were quite accurate.

But the yellow tafeta dress (#298) is a real pregnancy dress (contrary to the images below) because it’s longer on the front part, which allows us to deduct that its werer was very pregnant.

And now let’s talk about the topic of the day, bridal headdresses !

From 1830 to circa 1960 european brides used to wear orange blossoms on their wedding days.
Do not cut the wire when you have sewn the whole border ! You must keep at least 10 centimeters left or your hat will have a strange broken shape. So you will have 2 wires sewn on the hat border for few centimeters, as seen on the photo above.

I hope you’ll enjoy it (maybe one day I’ll transate it in english on this blog as it’s only in French for the moment). I tried to explain why accessories are so important, as it tells a lot of things about the character you are playing to be during reenactment.

Hat pin marks still can be seen on the felt from one side to the other : the woman who
used to wear it was righ-handed and took care not to drill more than one hole in the
felt on each side. However, she drilled several time the lining on the right side and
very few time the lining on the left side which means that generally she just leant the end
of the hatpin against the cone but did not drill that left side.

Few days ago I bought a cute little purse with paisley patterns (which need to be cleaned) with a small ring for hanging it on a chatelaine and re-embroidered with black pearls (typical of the end of the 19th century). But this small of fabric may had a life full of events ! Let’s investigate.

At the very beginning of the century this accessory used to cost a lot of money (something like the price of a luxurious sport car today) : any lady had to wear this sign of wealth (and it was smarter than the last Iphone, huh ?). And when Napoleon ordered a blockade to destroy any luxury business with the hated England, all the pretty girls needed it more than ever ! Empress Joséphine, who was a big shawl collector (you’ll can check here that she’s wearing a shawl on most of the paintings), had to find a lot of lies in order to make her husband Napoleon believing that this brand new shawl was an old rag ! (Napoléon was a fine observer so a lot of events happened like police searches in her dresses designer’s workshop or the seizure against his own wife after big customs duties). And one of the most popular sport during this days was the theft of this huge woolen piece.
