First of all, I want to thank all the people who help me on Tipee ! Even 1€/month means a lot to me and allow me to visit exhibitions like the one I am talking about in this article. And a very big « thank you » to Emily Maynard for the translation you are about to read !

***

This past summer, I went to see « The Anatomy of a Collection » at the Palais Galliera followed by “Fashion Forward” at the Arts Décoratifs for which I have already written a review. You could say I was pretty pissed off about that! Yet, time passed and a review about « The Anatomy » never showed up. So, since the exhibition is still showing, I told myself that it was time to write one!

The exhibition at the Palais Galliera runs until February 12 th , 2017. It’s without a doubt what I’m going to explain will not correspond with what you’ll see (and it might not correspond with what you saw if you’ve already seen the exhibit). My reason is simple: it’s necessary for the museum to rotate the clothing in order to avoid further damage! Lighting and any strain put on the clothes by the mannequins can damage the clothing in the long-run.

VIP LOUNGE: RELICS OF THE PAST

The exhibition starts strong with pieces that belonged to very famous people: stays that reportedly belonged to Marie-Antoinette, clothes that belonged to her son, the Dauphin, a frock coat of Napoleon Bonaparte’s, one of Empress Josephine’s dresses, Concordet’s waistcoat, and a lot more! The tone is set: you’re presented with clothing of people who would become legendary (hence the term “relics”), comparing the clothing to the “ghosts” of their owners. This expression may appear strange, but if you’ve ever handled very old clothing, you would’ve noticed that when it’s set on a table, it’s kept the shape of its owner (and you inevitably think of the autopsied body, it being difficult to close their wardrobe without a little heartache: these aren’t just inanimate objects, they were a second skin for their owners).

Opposite of these historic mastodons you’ll find clothing that belonged to servants, to the common people, and a whole wall of sublime revolutionary outfits made of plainly colored fabric but, in the end, the colors have proved longer-lasting than the silks and the cottons of their famous counterparts.

Enfin, le catalogue me semble totalement hors sujet.

Time to tell you what I thought about this exhibit!

I’m going to start with the things I didn’t like. Obviously, the fact that you aren’t allowed to take any pictures was a huge mistake on the museum’s part because that’s the biggest thing 21 st century visitors like to do! How are you supposed to convince your friends to come visit an exhibit if you can’t show them what you’re talking about or share your experience on social media? Secondly, men’s fashion kept disappearing little by little after the first room. I know that it’s less imagery, but I have a little trouble believing that the museum has only inherited things that would only interest half of its visitors. Lastly, the brochure came across as off-topic. The photography is beautiful, but it seemed to be intended for contemporary art lovers, rather than for people who would like to keep track of which exhibit they’ve come to see (remember it’s because photography is prohibited) or for people wanting to learn more about the history of clothes. See below:

Voila! I think you see where I’m coming from with this two captions, right? If an exhibition of this kind was being displayed at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris Modern Art Museum), I would’ve been delighted to go see it because I find the movement interesting (but this is totally off-topic for a Galliera exhibit!).

Now what I liked. I must confess that there were a lot of things! For a start, the costumes were well displayed. It’s very comforting to know that, considering that that was the issue with the previous exhibit (« La Mode retrouvée« ). Most importantly, the exhibit was consistent, it spoke to me and told a story that was at times poetic, or aesthetically pleasing, or philosophical. Anyway, it was consistent which makes the visitor reflect on things (even though I have the impression that a lot of those who are passionate about historic fashion are obsessed with exhibits, from what I’ve read on the internet). It was obvious that it’s impossible to display the depths of the Galliera museum’s collection, or cover every subject linked to each outfit, so the choice of using scenography was very pleasant. The scenography was sometimes minimalist and déjà vu, but I’d guess that the budget was tight because this exhibit was far from an exhibition at the Arts Décoratifs, who has its own exhibition going on right now, and sometimes had too much going on in one room. I found the clothing displayed well, without too many parts excluded (except for certain fragile pieces, but thankfully those were in small supply). Lastly, there wasn’t any misleading information used in order to create buzz (which was what shocked me most with “Fashion Forward” at the Arts Déco). Anyway, I was rather happy with this exhibit!

Of course, the quality was a couple notches beneath the past exhibits I’ve been to, like “Modes en miroir” (2005) or “Under the Crinoline Empire” (2009), but it’s the best exhibit I’ve seen at the Galliera in the past 7 years! It’s hard not to compare the Galliera to the Arts Décoratifs, especially since the exhibits they have at the same time usually have similar themes, but with very different budgets. Keeping in mind that the Palais Galliera is small, it’s forced to make difficult choices when it comes to which pieces to display (sometimes giving the impression that there’s “not enough”). I found “The Anatomy of a Collection” very honest, and I would without a doubt prefer it over a big flashy blockbuster that was “Fashion Forward”. So what did my “companion who knows nothing about costumes” think of it? He liked it and found it a pleasant visit (which is a miracle because my “rookie” companion is the most difficult person I’ve ever known to satisfy!).

I’ll write an exhibition review for « Fashion Forward » in Paris Arts Décoratifs museum today. Just a clarification before thinking I desesperatly pick on this exhibition : I liked it, and if you did not manage to go and see it before it ends this sunday (august, the 14th) then it’s too bad for you because it really worthed seeing it. However, some aspects saddened me for real. I really like this museum, which is a world reference, but some mistakes (or eases ?) made on this exhibition seem hardly forgivable for a museum of this scale. I would have closed my eyes for a small museum that cannot afford a costume historian, but not here : showing false informations is a problem for me. But I’ll talk about it later. This article will first tell you more about the exhibit itself, what I liked, my dampers and my red cards.

My dampers

After my visitS (I went there more than once before writting this article) I had this horrible feeling that the stage design was more important than the pedagogical content in most of the rooms, even that scientific rigor was silenced because it was nicer this way.

– A lot of items were displayed very high (notice that I liked it as I am very tall, but all the women who went there with me were frustrated because they didn’t see the whole things to see).
– Some of the notes were difficult to read without trigerring the alarm buzzer because they are put beyond the alarm. You lean to read and it rings.
– Good ideas on paper should stay on paper when they are horrible once made for real : displaying a part of the exhibit behind clothes was one of these ideas. It’s really unpleasant to look at and several details cannot be seen anymore (as the fabric’s colors, a « not such a détail » for me).
– Showing the clothes evolution is a good idea, but tripping over the carpet is a messy thing, even if the carpet is nicer this way… Let’s mix revolution clothes with napoleonic dresses ! And 1815 dresses with 1800 costumes ! It’s broadly the same. But the Arts Decoratif is a museum, I was waiting for something more rigorous…
– Some short films were projected in the 18th and 19th rooms, showing dancers in fancy costumes. No shirts under corsets, nothing historically accurate in the clothes I nearly put that point in the following part of the article (the « red cards ») but after going there with cambodian students who discovered western culture for the first time (they had never heard of « corsets » for example) I noticed these videos were better than no video at all for them. Too bad it’s not historical costumes.

Some clothes have no shapes, as they seem to have been dropped off the mannequins. I was shocked as more than 95% of the mannequins are perfect, maybe better than ever (it’s difficult to dress mannequins with antique clothes as the body shapes are not the same at all than today’s shapes). Some busts have been created to get the perfect shape. But some disasters can be seen, and I cannot explain that point. I visited the exhibition lately : they had evenings and nights to correct the mistakes… I don’t understand how the Art Décoratifs could let it be this way, that’s not very serious for a museum.

And it’s stuffed with errors. I wonder if they are mistakes or deliberate ? I explain : it is not about errors of inattention or errors that only a specialist can see, no, they are subtle errors which allow to amaze the visitors by emphasizing the oddity of our ancestors. I already blamed their exhibition « La mécanique des dessous » to make as if some exceptions were main rules by a soft focus in explanations, but I find that this last exhibition goes to far in the « we don’t care scientific facts, it’s cooler like that! ». I know that the people in charge of the exhibition are not all fashion historians, but there is at least one in the team, isn’t it? If he/she was going to be silenced then why making an exhibition of historical costumes?

|| Left : The « little girl’s dress » which will never fit to a child as it’s a doll or a mannequin or a statue dress. I have no child but I know that a child never had this body shape, as showed by the other grild dresses. Right : The corset cover worn under the corset. Conceptual, isn’t it ? And what about this corset which doesn’t seem very « human » for me ? I cannot be 100% sure as I didn’t have it in my hands but it’s new and looks like a window corset. The people around me were amazed by this « tiny waist » and it’s true that these « hourglass corsets » made a very thin waist, but I’d rather being sure that it was a real corset.

Today I will talk about « Déboutonner la Mode » at the « Musée des Arts Décoratifs » in Paris. As there is so much to say I will make three texts, and here is the first : 18th century.

***

The exhibit starts as a reminder : if buttons are nowadays simple plastic pieces, it was not true during older days. The first showcase shows a lot of materials (ceramic, leather, stones, metal, straw, glass, wood,…). And after that it’s all about 18th century.

Parures pour habits / adornment for coats
Most of the buttons are useless during the 18th century : few are used for closing, the others for decoration only. They are numerous and put over the front, the pockets, the sleeves and the start of the basques on the back.

It’s over for 18th century explanations ! The Arts Decoratifs is my favorite fashion museum in Paris, but I still have few criticisms (which are not very important cling to how amazing the exhibit is) :
– Some 17th buttons are missing. The collection start during the 18th, but it would have been interesting for visitors to see a doublet just to remember that it was used long before the 18th century.
– Some little mistakes (as telling that french coats had 18 buttons exactly, all surrounded by a lot of frech coats having more than 18 buttons : I know what they meant but it’s a little bit clumsy).
See you soon for showing you the 19th century buttons !
